I Don’t Wanna Grow Up…

“All children are artists. The problem is how to remain an artist once he grows up.” -Picasso

My solution:  I refuse to grow up.  (I don’t wanna!  I don’t wanna!  You can’t make me!)

So, I have been pretty bad about blogging (again).  So I thought I would just give a brief overview of the things I have been up to, thinking about, trying not to think about and refusing to acknowledge.

Etsy has been going okay.  I have been selling for 2 months now and have 7 sales.  I keep hearing that it is super slow right now for sellers, so I am hoping that things will pick up even more.  I’m just happy to be selling anything – especially since I am a newbie to Etsy.

My Spring Open House will more than likely be late in May, but not the weekend of Mother’s day like it normally is (and not Memorial Day weekend).  I have decided to shoot for later in the month to try and be more prepared.  If I still need more time, I am going to have in the first weekend in June… stay tuned for more info!

I have been working diligently on jewelry, but have also been working on scarves, magnets, hair clips and brooches.  I am considering getting rid of the “Heaven and Earth Jewelry” name and just sticking with “Creativity is Messy”.  It seems to fit and it allows more room for growth into other craft areas.  I will be including some of my new “mediums” in this years spring show for people to check out.  I would love your imput!

Outside of the “crafting” arena, life is… well… life.  I keep trying to run away from it, but it won’t let me.  Work is crazy busy.  I took last week off (because I had to use my vacation time before I lost it) and am now even more behind.  Home is crazy as well.  So much going on!

Sometimes I feel like I have 3 or 4 full time jobs…  and it is times like those that I just want to sit at the dining room table with a hot cup of coco, like I did when I was a kid and color.  But I usually settle for my craft table, a latte and my beads.

Craft Room Progress

Well, I have been working diligently on fixing up my office / craft room these last few weeks.  There are still a few more things to do, like paint the walls (turquoise) and the craft table (deep red), and purchase a few misc items like a new stool and garbage can.  Other than that it has been coming along quite nicely and I am able to use it – which is wonderful.  I love having my own little creative space.

Here is a pic of my work area…

My table and temporary stool

And a pic of my “sideways” sign, and how I attempted to fix it…

Not so bad, I guess...

Worky, Work… Busy Bee…

So, I have been slacking off in the “Blogging” Department.  When I started this, I wanted to write at least once a week, but life tends to get in the way.

I have been working on a lot of Jewelry and a few other random crafts, but haven’t been very good about writing down my journeys.  I have been working a lot on my Etsy shop (check it out!  www.creativityismessy.etsy.com) and joined the Eastern Washington Etsy Team.  The whole process has been a little overwhelming at first, but I am slowly easing in to it (I think).

I am currently sending some of my inventory to Ohio for a craft show that my Brother-in-law’s Mother is participating in.  I don’t know much about the show, but she wears a necklace that I made and is always getting compliments and inquiries about it.  Since she has been telling people about my work, she thought it would be a great opportunity for me to get a few sales.  Should be interesting.

I am also preparing for my in-home jewelry show in May.  Seems like I have a lot of time, but for the first time in a while, I don’t have much inventory.  So I have to start all over again…  which I actually look forward to 😉  I get tired of seeing the same old pieces get looked over because they are no long the latest “thing”.  It gives me a change to update my entire stock.  However, it’s going to be a lot of work!

Still working on my craft room and my craft table.  The table is put together, but needs to be painted.  The craft room also needs to be painted, but I’m not sure when I will have the time or the funds to tackle that project.

Oh, and then there is that whole work 40+ hours at my “grown-up” job…  still cutting into my creative time!

This weekend I am headed over to the west side of Washington State to visit my BFF, Katie.  We are planning on making a trip down to Shipwreck Beads, so I should be able to stock up on supplies.  We also plan on pampering ourselves with mani/pedis.  Then there is coffee, dinner, drinks… a whole wonderful weekend, just us girls.  Not to mention we will be doing some series, level 5, till our feet bleed and our legs ache shopping all around the Seattle area.  I’m uber excited!

Creativity is….. Sideways?

I love to give gifts.  I especially love to find the “perfect” gift for someone and to see their face when they open it.  When it comes to presents, I am always trying to find or do something memorable.  I learned from my aunt Joyce, who always found the coolest, most unique gifts for people.  They were always just perfect.  I don’t know how she did it, but I strive everyday to be as good of a gift-giver as she was.

That being said, for my sister’s 40th birthday, I decided to take her out for coffee and then to a local pottery painting studio.  I was really excited.  There is a “Color Me Mine” here in Spokane, so I let her pick anything she wanted and I picked up the bill.  Of course, being my sister, she picked out a simple, small, non-expensive vase.  But, that is my sister… something big and extravagant just wouldn’t have been her.

While by sister picked out her project, I found a square plaque that I thought would make a great sign for the door of my craft room.  It had two holes in the top so I could hang it with ribbon or wire.  I thought out my design and the two of us got painting.

It took two days for me to finish my sign.  Between the talking and laughing that was going on the first night and my need for lots of detail and color, I put a good 4 hours into this one piece.  But I was very pleased with it.  The colors were perfect for the room.  The design was exactly my style.  And the lettering looked pretty good… that is until I realized that I had forgotten to make sure that the holes to hang the plaque were in the right spot.  That is right…. my sign is sideways.

Notice the holes on the right hand side…

My once sign is now a trivet....

Creativity is messy… and not perfect, either.  Ironic isn’t it?

The Craft Table and My “Trip” Down the Stairs

I’m sore.  Also tired… somewhat hungry… a little grumpy… but mostly sore.

I planned on writing in my blog today about the amazing craft table that I finished this weekend.  I was inspired by an old window that my husband wanted to get rid of, but I insisted we keep because I knew I could find a purpose for it.  I came up with an idea to upcycle the window into a table top for a tall craft table to use in my new craft room.  I went to Lowes, got all the necessary materials and a little advice to begin my project.  I set up my garage (equiped with a heater) as my workspace for my table-building expedition.  I took pictures as I progressed in my first attempt at making any-sort of furniture.  I was so truly proud!

Anyway, I had just gotten the table legs attached to the plywood frame when I had to go inside to grab some more tools.  As I went back out to the garage with my hands full of tools and such, I stepped down on to one of the icy concrete steps leading to our back patio, when suddenly…. Slip, SMACK, BOOM, BAM!!!  My legs slipped out from under me and I fell down the stairs.  There I am… laying on the cold concrete ground, looking like a toolbox exploded all over me, making sure I wasn’t impaled by a screwdriver or shot by the staple gun and trying to hold back the tears…  Thank God my cell phone was in my pocket and I was able to call my husband (who was inside the house) to come and help me.

I did manage to get a few more things done before my body completely stiffed up and was unable to move most of Sunday.  I don’t think I did any major damage.  No bones broken, no twisted ankles, injured wrists or torn knee tendons.  I think my tailbone took the brunt of the fall and it seems to be in one piece.  I do have a nice couple of bruises to show off however (don’t worry – I didn’t take any pictures of those).

I am feeling a little better today, but I may just wait until I have my full range of motion back before I go finishing the table.  Or at least wait until we invest in some ice-melt…  Ouchie….

The Craft Room…

I haven’t been blogging much lately (or doing much of anything), as Christmas completely kicked my a$$.  However, this weekend I am partaking in a long outstanding tradition in the Larson Household of ridding the house of all the crap we no longer use and making room for all the new stuff we got this Christmas.  In addition, this year I will begin the process of redecorating my master bedroom and revamping my spare bedroom into my craft room/office.  I am super excited.

I found some “inspiration” to start off my craft room at Pier 1 this week….

INSPIRE sign from Pier 1

I haven’t completely figured out the entire craft room, but I know it will have a lot of color.  I am leaning toward turquoise walls with coral colored accents (like a rug, drapes, etc.), but nothing is set in stone.  I want it to be extremely colorful and lively in order to really get my creative juices flowing.

It more than likely will be a slow process, but I’m hoping the majority will be done within the month or so.  I’ll keep my blog up to date with pics of both rooms…
